From YouTube videos and Instagram reels to blog posts and talk shows, we are surrounded by advice claiming to \u201cheal your trauma,\u201d \u201cfix your anxiety,\u201d or \u201creprogram your brain in 7 days.\u201d This trend is known as Pop Psychology and while it looks helpful on the surface, it can be misleading, harmful, and sometimes even dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is Pop Psychology?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Pop psychology refers to psychological ideas, tips, and techniques that gain popularity through media, rather than being grounded in science or clinical experience. These messages often:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promise quick fixes to deep problems<\/li>\n<li>Rely on emotional appeal, not evidence<\/li>\n<li>They are created by people without medical or psychological training<\/li>\n<li>Get repeated so often that people start believing them as the truth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As a psychiatrist in Nepal, I frequently see the effects of these misleading ideas. There are many examples where Pop psychology is being exploited for profit, fame, and influence.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A young woman with panic attacks stopped her medication after watching a video titled \u201cYou Don\u2019t Need Pills, Just Breathe Right.\u201d Her condition worsened severely within two weeks.<\/li>\n<li>A college student felt ashamed for being unable to \u201cthink positively\u201d and blamed himself for his depression after following a motivational influencer\u2019s advice.<\/li>\n<li>A patient with PTSD was using a \u201ctrauma healing journal\u201d he bought online for Rs. 2,500. It contained vague affirmations but no structured therapy guidance, and delayed him from seeking real help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>How is Pop Psychology being exploited?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Influencers selling courses or workshops claiming to &#8220;heal childhood trauma&#8221; in a weekend<\/li>\n<li>Unqualified coaches giving therapy-like advice on TikTok, often without licenses<\/li>\n<li>Self-help books or planners with no clinical basis, charging thousands of rupees<\/li>\n<li>Motivational speakers branding mental illness as a \u201cmindset problem\u201d<\/li>\n<li>YouTube channels promoting \u201cdetox your brain\u201d or \u201crewire your subconscious\u201d methods without any scientific proof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this Dangerous?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pop psychology oversimplifies serious mental health conditions. But for anyone dealing with Depression, Anxiety disorders, Bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, Schizophrenia, or Substance use disorders, these superficial solutions are not enough.
